Transcript: We All Want to Feel Good
We all want to suffer less, to be less distressed. And we want to feel good and more fulfilled in our lives. We want to be vibrantly alive and to enjoy the relief of simply being ourselves. In a word, we want to be happy. Of course we usually want others to be happy too, and fortunately these go hand in hand.
I have some bad news though. While almost everyone says that they want to be happier, people don’t tend to become happier. Most of us remain at about the same level of happiness throughout our lives. We may experience brief dips or blips in our well-being, but our general level of happiness usually remains pretty consistent.
So we’ve got to ask: “If pretty much everyone wants to become happier but not many of us succeed, what’s the problem?” Some people claim that our level of happiness or unhappiness is determined by our genes and it just can’t change much. Fortunately, that’s dead wrong and there is lots of research showing that people can become less distressed and become genuinely happier in their lives.
